After reading the
discussion on the canopy latching check list I decided to build a
latching indicator into my LNC2.  A micro switch closes when the latch
is engaged and the canopy is closed.  This turns off the msg indicators
on the panel.  Take a look at the attached pictures.

Canopy Open Msg

I have a similar arrangement on my IV-P and have been very pleased with it. Not as sophisticated as your integration,
but it’s twice indicated to me that the canopy was not fully locked when I closed it (there 8 latches on the IV-P that need to fully engage to keep the canopy closed under pressure). SO FAR, I’ve not tried to take off with the canopy unlocked, but on the two
above occasions, a small cir-clip came out of one of the door latches, causing that latch to not go “over-center.” The warning light caught them both; the fix very quick and easy.

BTW, I installed this system during building after seeing an IV-P at Brad Simmons’ paint shop without a door…and the
hinge mounts ripped out of the top of the cabin…it was not pretty…

GA,

This looks like a good design. I like the fact
that the micro switch is on the canopy side so just having the lever down is not
enough to extinguish the warning.  The only thing that I could think of
that would make it even more redundant/foolproof would be to have micro switches
on both sides and both would have to be activated to extinguish the warning.
Nice job.

Hi,

This is pretty much what I am planning to fit on my 320.

I was even thinking of extending it to a big red “showstopper – do not take
off” warning light. For instance, based on the things I have once or twice
forgotten over the years in other planes, the light would be on if any of these
applied:
Canopy unlatched
Flaps still up
Fuel system not correct.

I do like your indicator system.

I would rather have the warning on the PFD in BIG RED LETTERS...perhaps tie it to a really loud aural system.
