HI THERE
I WROTE PREVIOUSLY ABOUT A REPETITIVE REQUIREMENT TO INSPECT THE STARTER ADAPTER PAUL MILLER corrected me on the fact that it is not an AD but a service bulletin IT REQUIRES an inspection of the starter adapter every 25 hours because of the design of O ring groove. and with a limit of 500 hours in service i never heard of it until the engine was in the shop and i was faced with $4,000 worth of parts the danger is that that original starter adapter can fail and pump metal into the engine..NOT A GOOD THING SO THE QUESTIONS BECOME 1. has your engine been in service, or purchased prior to 2002 2. how many hours do you have on your starter adapter (usually hours since overhaul) 3, have you ever inspected the starter adapter AND there are many under 500 hour Lancair out there; i would even say that over half are under 500 hours. what is the likelihood that the starter drives are being inspected every 25 hours? what is the likelihood that owners even know about this issue? i stand corrected that it is not an AD my mistake yet if someone is buying or selling a Lancair this is a potential issue peter To: lml [at] lancaironline.net Date: Mon, 23 Jun 2014 07:21:57 -0400 From: pjdmiller [at] gmail.com Subject: [LML] Re: STARTER ADAPTER AD every 25 hours Peter,
it is not an AD. There was warranty coverage. The revision was in 2002 so how many engines today are affected? The last revision allowed the inspections to continue from 250 to 500 hours. The inspection was an eyeball look taking 15 seconds with the cowl off. Those affected likely took steps 12 years ago to deal with the warranty claim. Your
comment about most owners ignoring an AD does not seem accurate or appropriate and given your misunderstanding of the situation I think you should retract most of that post. Paul miller Legacy
