I have over 500 hours on my IV-P with the VM-1000 and am pleased with the system.

The display is transflective so it is readable in all lighting conditions. I would

recommend a separate dimmer control for the display backlight. The IV-P requires

more engine management than the average light plane so the features provided by

the VM system are useful. The fuel system is as accurate as your calibration.

To improve the reliability of the system I soldered all electrical connections,

including CHT, EGT and TIT thermocouple wires (where I used silver solder). I also

replaced the factory provided wire with aircraft quality Tefzel wire.

Do not use any crimp on "Faston" type connectors as they will fail. This is

particularly true for the temperature and pressure sensors. The only electrical

problem I have had to date is due to a Faston connection (there are only three in

my airplane and two of those are on the Hobbs).

In regards to the question about the VM 1000,  in it's day it was a fine piece of equipment. But it's outdated and hard to get repaired or support. It is also extremely limited in it's functionality
I would urge you to look at some of the newer engine monitors. In fact most of the EFIS companies have an engine monitor integral in the unit. A couple to look at would be Dynon or Advanced flight systems. There is also the MVP -50 which is a stand alone but will display on some EFIS.

I would second Jon’s comments about Vision Microsystems being hard to service.   I have been working on a friend’s IV-P, which has the VM-1000 system and have been in contact with JPI (who purchased Vision Microsystems) about repair parts.  The service has been less than satisfactory………..  in fact, I haven’t talked to a supplier in quite a while that exhibited the bluntness, aloofness, and lack of concern whether you got the information needed or not.  With the economy like it is, you would think that JPI would want to keep the customers they have instead of losing them because of poor service.

When I was in sales, I was told that it took 20% of your sales effort to keep a customer and 80% of your efforts to get a new customer.  Which would you do?

technical readers press delete.  I just wanted to say I have been so excited with jpi ever since they decided they owned my data that I used the edm700 that came with my project to monitor temperatures around the cowling and bleep if something gets too hot.

the little man in there is not happy.  He keeps saying "you disconnected my probe".

A gentleman named Reggie has been providing aftermarket support for the VM 1000, since jPI isn't really interested in servicing The hardware.  The gotcha however is that he is on extended vacation out of the country. His email is

Is anyone familiar with an Australian group who has been trying to burn replacement chips for the VM 1000?
