Chelton NavData updates and SmartMedia Card Repair

I have over the years purchased new SmartMedia cards (32MB) to regularly program NAVOBST updates (21MB total size), replacing failed cards.  Cards seem to stop working, don't get recognized by the Chelton (even though the presence of the disc is acknowledged on the display start up), or don't grant access from the Maintenance Screen to the NAVOBST files present.  



I know the files are there on the SmartMedia, as my laptop's card reader sees the card, transfers the updated NAVOBST files to the card, and card's contents are discoverable on the removable drive of any non-Chelton computer.



I presume, based on the referenced LML postings, that the cards have been corrupted by removing them when power was present, which somehow screws them.  But they are still fully functional in the laptop's card reader, so this corruption must be Chelton-specific.



Is there a way to DISC REPAIR or isolate the bad or damaged blocks to retain their usefulness?  It would be a shame to discard them only to discovered later that I could have repaired them.  The cost of these cards is not trivial.



Note that I have also tried to reformat them in the Chelton itself, using the keyboard, the DOS feature via ESC from the Maintenance Screen, the FORMAT D: instruction.  But if the Chelton fails to recognize the card in the slot (again, even though the boot up screen notes the presence of the extra disc), I can't ever get to the Maintenance Screen.  Is there a forced way to get Mr Chelton to recognize the card and give me access to reformatting whatever is in the D: drive?

This is the Chelton nemesis.  I have been using xD cards with an

adapter as per Tim Olsen (check his site

http://www.cheltonefispilots.com/forums/) with good success.  In

general format in FAT not FAT32.  Use a PC (I am a mac user and

sometimes the formating doesn't seem to work).  If after you put the

card in and apply power, you do not get to the maintenance screen, do

a soft reboot - press both round buttons at the same time.  If none of

these work, try it again.

theoretically one could add dummy files that occupy the bad

parts so only the good parts are free for new data. This would

work because SmartMedia cards don’t have ware leveling

code like every other solid state mem device.

just because a tiny part of the card with directory information

is readable doesn’t mean there aren’t some holes in the data

portion of the card.



also, hardware does go bad, I have seen some SmartMedia readers in CFS

go bad, in fact one of mine requires a reset after boot

(two finger salute) to reset the reader to recognize a SmartMedia card.

Asking if anyone has a solution to the problem of SmartMedia cards and the Chelton system.



It’s been a bit since this discussion.  I am down to my last two SmartMedia cards that work.  Buying used ones has been a failure, as all of them have been troubled: they work in the computer, but not the Chelton.  



I have gotten the SmartMedia xD adapters and 32MD xD cards, but even those don’t work (brand new ones) in the Chelton (but they do work in the computer).  I have reformated with FAT and FAT16 and FAT32, yet none of this has improved my situation.  I’m sure I am not alone.



Is there a solve out there?  I am familiar with Tim Olson’s suggestions on CheltonEFISpilots.com (Dec 2008), which echo your guidance (below).

Jeffrey,  I bought ten cards about a year ago and all seem to function. Off and on I have to re format (fat 32), but all in all they seem to work well. I'll see if I can find the source and pass it on.

Try formatting the smart media cards using the Chelton.  I did this for some XD chips.  I got into ground maintenance mode and plugged in a keyboard and kit the escape key. That sent me to a "DOS" prompt.
From there you just have to remember your old DOS commands. The XD chip was "E" drive. So type "E:" Then "format e:" Before I formatted the XD chip, I typed "dir" and the Chelton read the chip but it was in Arabic or at least that is what it looked like to
me. After formatting and reloading the files from my laptop, all was perfect!
