I've spent the last couple weeks adjusting the up and down stops on
the hydraulic cylinders. Now that the new spool pieces have arrived
from Lancair, that task is almost complete; But now my hydraulic
pump is acting weird. (It's almost 30 years old, so that's not
surprising.) Today while I was cycling the gear up and down,
sometimes the gear wouldn't come down with the pump running in the
"down" direction. Not good. I don't know whether that was just due
to air in the system, or something sticking in the pump itself.
Obviously, I need to buy the pressure gauges from Grainger so I know
what's going on, but should I also plan on going through Chris
Zaveston's procedure
and spend a month rebuilding this pig?
Where would I even obtain the rebuild kit?

I seriously regret that I installed my pump behind the
baggage bulkhead. What was I thinking??? If I have to rebuild it,
I'm moving it to the front side along with the pressure
switches.

Yet another detour on the road to my first flight...

Yes, I've done the weight and balance, but I still have the
scale so I can re-do it if I need to.

I saw your installation at Greenville, and it was nice looking and
very accessible. My pump, pressure switches, and relays are
currently mounted on the aft face of the baggage bulkhead. I believe
I'll move the pump and pressure switches to the front side for
access. That won't change the W&B too much.

Going through my records, my Oildyne pump is model 108-AA-19-AL-3VT,
a true antique (but low mileage). It has the metal sump, not the
plastic one. The pressure switches are the ones with the gold
anodized covers and the wires coming out the top inside a clear
vinyl sheath.

I won't be relocating (or replacing) the hydraulic pump until I'm
finished with the gear up/down stops.

So who carries these pumps if I have to buy a new one with the
back-pressure circuit? Who carries the rebuild kits?

Hi John,

Have you done a weight & balance calculation yet?

If you are planning to move your pump,…and I would highly
recommend it, create an access panel in your seatback

and mount the pump on a partial bulkhead directly behind your
seat.

I have a few pics if you like.

Sound advice Bill – I would humbly state that the same
advice applies to the Bosch relays you are using. As you may recall, last
November my up relay welded itself shut, causing an uncommanded gear retraction
on the ground. The resulting prop strike grounded my plane for 50 days at a
distant airport. Insurance covered the expense but I will be paying higher
premiums for years to come. I replaced the Bosch relays with the Lancair-recommended
heavy duty automotive style contactors. I still hold my breath every time I
turn on the master switch.

Nice looking installation! Thanks for the photos and the advice.
I am assuming that this pump is a special order since I'm unable
to decipher some of the part number:

108 = 108 Series

AM = Series Wound DC Motor

S = Standard Temperature Rating

32 = Pump Size (.0321 CIPR)

C = Reservoir Size (46 cu.in - 26 cu.in useable)

ZZ = UNKNOWN Circuit
Configuration

3 = 1/8" Pipe Ports

V = Vertical Mount

14 = High Pressure Relief Valve Setting (1400 PSI)

08 = Low Pressure Relief Valve Setting (800 PSI)

Y = UNKNOWN

I guess I'll have to whip out my credit card and buy a new pump.
May I ask where you bought yours?

Hi All,

I've been meaning to send this out for a while, but I wanted to give you all an update on our hydraulic system problems. Some of you may remember me as the guy who had a plethora of questions and laments about our hydraulic system. It turned out that we were simply fighting multiple problems at the same time. We now have gotten everything worked out, but i did want to make something of a public service announcement. If any of you need a new Hydraulic power pack on your planes, the one Kit Components currently sells is purchased from Parker-Oildyne. They are asking $1,350 to buy the pump from them. Plus, since they need to order them from Parker, it takes a little over a month to get one. We needed a new pump, so I looked into other options. Eventually I was able to get Parker to make me essentially the exact same pump for $750, plus i got it about 2 weeks faster. I don't usually like going around the Lancair guys, but this was a little too big of a price
difference to ignore. I wanted to let you all know the part number that i got from Parker-Oildyne in case anyone needs a new pump.

That part number is 108AMS32-DLD-3V-14-08-Y. It is now installed in our bird and working very well.

Thanks for all your help in dealing with this problem. Especially Chris Zavatson, your advice really helped us getting to the bottom of this!

Best,

Sam

Give your local CBVL Parker store a call with the specs for the pump. I have been buying pumps directly from our local store for years. Just be sure and tell them that it is for an "off road vehicle" if they should happen to ask. I have had no trouble getting parts and service from them as well.

John - I purchased my current pump from Lancair in 2005.

My 90's-era pump frequently locked-up shortly after landing, becoming unresponsive to gear retract. Incredibly, shortly after landing, enough pressure built up in the high pressure circuit to open the high pressure switch, preventing retract. The only way to free it was to open a fitting to release pressure.

I returned the pump to Oildyne at least three times: the first time, I had the 'backpressure relief' installed, which did not correct the lock up. I returned it a second time, telling them about the lock-up. They 'bench-checked' and returned it, telling me there was no problem; but -of course- it continued locking up.The third time I told them "don't bench check it, just rebuild it"! They did so and, of course, it continued to lock up. From what I've read over the years, I suspect at least one-half of the older pumps had that problem.

Adam -

I feel badly for your uncommanded nose gear
retract last November and the damage it caused. I had a similar incident in
my hangar, and a crushed lower cowl, when attempting to un-lock my
older gear pump back in 2004.
I went back and read and re-read your
post last November listing the symptoms leading up to your incident
and can't come up with any explanation other than the relay contacts
staying shut. Although my Bosch relays have functioned without a problem
for over ten years, I'll be wary and consider replacing them.

Thanks Paul, that's useful information.
I'm pretty sure the part number is incorrect, though; I think it
should be 108AMS32-DLB
(not D)-3V-14-08-Y. There is no
"LD" code listed in the Oildyne manual, but "LB" designates
"Reversible locking with Back Pressure", which I think is
what people are using these days. Perhaps if Sam's part number was
read over the phone, the B was understood as D?

For all the folks suggesting I purchase a new pump at a marine or
industrial supply store, that's not going to won't fly (no pun
intended) if I give them the 108AMS32-CZZ-3V-14-08-Y part number
that Lancair used to sell. It seems that Oildyne had included a
"secret code" in that part number that translates to "for use in
an experimental aircraft". That would be either the "ZZ" code in
the "Circuit Type" block, or the "Y" suffix. Anybody know what the
"Y" suffix means? Chris Z?

What I need is to find the real part number without the
secret codes. I think 108AMS32-CLB-3V-14-08 may be it.

Anybody know the details of the EAB accident that precipitated the
lawsuit against Oildyne? It seems like the EAA should get involved
in this situation somehow. Oildyne refusing to supply their
products to homebuilders is definitely going to have an adverse
impact on safety by forcing us to use older, obsolete, power
packs. Maybe the EAA could indemnify Oildyne if they start selling
their pumps again? Just a thought...

Fortunately, Parker builds pumps for a few other applications.
Reference this note on another site for possible solution (a
few years old.

Subject: [Lancair] Parker Hydraulic
Pump for 320/360

Hi All,

I've been meaning to send this out for
a while, but I wanted to give you all an update on our
hydraulic system problems. Some of you may remember me as
the guy who had a plethora of questions and laments about
our hydraulic system. It turned out that we were simply
fighting multiple problems at the same time. We now have
gotten everything worked out, but i did want to make
something of a public service announcement. If any of you
need a new Hydraulic power pack on your planes, the one Kit
Components currently sells is purchased from Parker-Oildyne.
They are asking $1,350 to buy the pump from them. Plus,
since they need to order them from Parker, it takes a little
over a month to get one. We needed a new pump, so I looked
into other options. Eventually I was able to get Parker to
make me essentially the exact same pump for $750, plus i got
it about 2 weeks faster. I don't usually like going around
the Lancair guys, but this was a little too big of a price

difference to ignore. I wanted to let
you all know the part number that i got from Parker-Oildyne
in case anyone needs a new pump.

That part number is
108AMS32-DLD-3V-14-08-Y. It is now installed in our bird and
working very well.

Thanks for all your help in dealing
with this problem. Especially Chris Zavatson, your advice
really helped us getting to the bottom of this!

Best,

Sam

They will go after anyone they think they can get
(take) some money from, rightfully or not, they don't care.

Due to litigation against Parker Hannifin last year involving a fatal EAB
accident, the company  withdrew the pumps from the
market.

Sound advice Bill – I would
humbly state that the same advice applies to the Bosch relays you are using.
As you may recall, last November my up relay welded itself shut, causing an
uncommanded gear retraction on the ground. The resulting prop strike
grounded my plane for 50 days at a distant airport. Insurance covered the
expense but I will be paying higher premiums for years to come. I replaced
the Bosch relays with the Lancair-recommended heavy duty automotive style
contactors. I still hold my breath every time I turn on the master switch.

If the Parker store asks for a part number, will they know about its likely

use? There are many models to choose from so what do you ask for

specifically that doesn't identify what we use it for?

Jim

Hi John and all,

Give your local CBVL Parker store a call with the specs for the pump. I have

been buying pumps directly from our local store for years. Just be sure and

tell them that it is for an "off road vehicle" if they should happen to ask.

I have had no trouble getting parts and service from them as well.

Hi Colin,

CBVL is Christenson-Bellows Valvair Ltd. "CBVL The Parker Store"  is just the name of the store. I had thought that they were an international company, but after a short search they are only in Canada. My mistake. I'm sure that there are similar companies in the USA. Look for companies that carry hydraulic components and I'm sure you will find a local company that carries the parker and oildyne products.

Cheers,

Shane

Well this is a heluva note. I just called Michelle at Lancair and she

informs me that since last October, Oildyne has stopped selling their

power packs for use on experimental aircraft. It looks like I'm well and

truly screwed.

John,
The second "D" is for the symmetric spool.  Not required on the 235-360, but makes assembly easier.
Chris

"Thanks Paul, that's useful information. I'm pretty sure the part number is incorrect, though; I think it should be 108AMS32-DLB (not D)-3V-14-08-Y. There is no "LD" code listed in the Oildyne manual, but "LB" designates "Reversible locking with Back Pressure", which I think is what people are using these days. Perhaps if Sam's part number was read over the
phone, the B was understood as D?"
